Its history begins at the beginning of the 20 th century when a herring factory was situated here in 1917 causing a temporary boom in the local economy. The factory was subsequently expanded during 1930s to one of the largest concrete structures in Iceland during that period. But after the herring population plummeted abruptly in the 1950s, the former busy settlement was the quiet and lonely location of the huge abandoned factory which has now been turned into a symbolic tourist landmark of Djupavik.
